Frequently asked questions

There are a few airport options in Senegal, but Blaise Diagne International Airport (AIBD) near Dakar is often considered the main airport of entry for international flights. However, the choice may depend on your precise destination in Senegal.

The currency used in Senegal is the CFA franc (Communauté Financière Africaine), which is common to several West African countries.

There are several means of transport in Senegal. In the cities, you’ll find cabs, car rapides (colorful minibuses) and buses to get you around. Between towns, there are coaches (called “sept-places”) and buses. Longer journeys can be made by plane or train, depending on the destination. We still recommend renting your own car during your stay, or using VTC apps like Yango and Heetch.

You can find car rental agencies in Senegal’s major cities, such as Dakar, Saint-Louis, Thiès and other tourist centers. International airports, notably Blaise Diagne International Airport near Dakar, also offer car rental services. It is generally advisable to book in advance to have more choice and to get better rates.

Tipping is not always expected in Senegal, but it is appreciated for good service. In restaurants, a tip of around 5-10% of the bill is common if a service is not already included. For services such as cab drivers or tour guides, rounding off the amount is common practice. But again, it depends on the quality of the service and your own appreciation.

Senegal has a generally warm climate all year round, but this can vary according to the season. At this time of year, you can expect pleasantly warm temperatures, often with sunshine. The coolest period is from December to mid-February, with daytime averages around 24°C. It could therefore be cold in the evenings during this period. However, it’s a good idea to check local forecasts, as weather conditions can vary from one part of the country to another.
